Junior A in Wasilla?

March 5th, 2004- This seems to be the question floating around the hockey community, not just in Alaska, but also around the country. Every day the Arctic Ice gets closer and closer to bringing a Junior A team in the North American Hockey League to the Mat-Su Valley. A tentative agreement has been made for Steve MacSwain to be the Head Coach, assisted by Corey Millen. Other ex-professional players have expressed their interest to help put this team together along with MacSwain and Millen.

The organization is still working on fundraising and finding investors to support this great opportunity. Work is being done to have the team operational in time for spring tryouts, and play in the 2004-2005 season. Plans are to play in the new Wasilla Multi-use Sports Complex, with the possibility to seat over 2000 local fans. A competitive team, with championship thoughts immediately on their mind is a sure bet with the professional experience in the coaching staff.

Steve MacSwain is one of the most prominent names in Alaskan Hockey. Prior to his 5 years with the Anchorage Aces, he played for the U of Minnesota Golden Gophers, 3 years in pro roller hockey, a year in the now defunct IHL, and a year in the European hockey leagues. Steve has also been involved at coaching from the smallest of youth teams, to the professional ranks. Steve is also the owner of Acceleration Alaska; a sports oriented fitness center located n Anchorage.

Corey Millen has over ten years experience in the NHL, as well as 6 years in Europe following his college career as a Golden Gopher and playing on the US National Team. Corey has vast connections around the hockey world, and will be able to guide our young players to the college ranks and beyond.

If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor, season ticket holder, or volunteer, you can email info@alaskaarcticice.com. We look forward to seeing you at spring training!
